Upper Thracian Plain / Gornotrakiyska Nizina

The Upper Thracian Plain (Bulgarian: Горнотракийска низина, Gornotrakiyska nizina) constitutes the northern part of the historical region of Thrace. It is located in southern Bulgaria, between the Sredna Gora mountains to the north and west; the Rhodopes, Sakar and Strandzha to the south; and the Black Sea to the east. A fertile agricultural region, the Upper Thracian Plain proper has an area of 6,032 km? and an average elevation of 168 m.

The plain is part of North Thrace or Northern Thrace (Северна Тракия, Severna Trakiya) (as opposed to Western Thrace and Eastern Thrace to the south), which refers to the whole of southern (sub-Balkan) Bulgaria east of the Mesta River and Sredna Gora (thus also including hilly or mountainous terrain).

The climate is transitional continental. The highest temperature recorded in Bulgaria occurred here: it was 45.2 °C at Sadovo in 1916. The precipitation is 550 mm a year. Important rivers are the Maritsa and its tributaries, the Tundzha, the Stryama, the Topolnitsa, and the Vacha.

Important cities include Plovdiv, Burgas, Stara Zagora, Pazardzhik, Asenovgrad, Haskovo, Yambol and Sliven.

Danubian Plain / Dunavska Ravnina

The Danubian Plain (Bulgarian: Дунавска равнина, transliterated Dunavska ravnina) constitutes the northern part of Bulgaria, situated north of the Balkan Mountains and south of the Danube. Its western border is the Timok River and to the east it borders the Black Sea. The plain has an area of 31,523 km?, being about 500 km long and from 20 to 120 km wide.

The relief of the Danubian Plain is hilly and has many plateaux and river valleys. The climate is well-defined temperate continental with a weak Black Sea influence in the east, precipitation being an average 450-650 mm a year. Important rivers include the Danube, the Iskar, the Yantra, the Osam, the Vit, the Rusenski Lom, the Ogosta and the Lom.

Among the major cities of the region are Varna, Rousse, Pleven, Dobrich, Shumen, Veliko Tarnovo, Vratsa, Vidin, Montana, Silistra, Targovishte, and Razgrad.

Rudozem

The municipality of Rudozem is located in southern Bulgaria near the Greek  border. It is situated in the most southeastern part of the Western Rodopi Mountains along the valleys of Arda, Chepinska and Elhovska River.

The municipality of Rudozem has common borders with the municipalities of Smolyan, Madan, Zlatograd, and with the Republic of Greece to the south.
The average altitude is 700-800 m and the areas are mainly hilly and low mountainous. The climate is typical for mountains with average altitude.

On the territory of the municipality it is located an interesting rocky shape called “Kichika” which is 4 km away into the direction of the village of Chepinci; the ancient tree “Stariat Dub”(Old Oak) is 5 km away from the village of Vitina; the “Dupkata” Cave (the Hole) is to be found near the village of “Dobreva cheresha” (Dobreva`s cherry tree).

Popovo

The Popovo Municipality is located in the northeastern part of the Republic of Bulgaria, in the Danubian Plain (Distrrict Targovishte). The municipal center Popovo is a station on the railway line Varna-Sofia and at the crossing points of roads to Veliko Tarnovo, Byala, Ruse, Razgrad, Targovishte-Shoumen, Omurtag and Antonovo. The terrain is mostly rolling plain, plateau-like, with an altitude from 130 to 485 m. The climate is moderate continental. The following were found in Popovo municipality: over 40 settlement mounds and prehistoric terraced settlements; more than 70 tumuli; over 50 ancient and medieval fortresses and remains of villages. The fertile land, the well-preserved environment, the diverse fauna and historical landmarks are evenly spread across the entire territory of the municipality. The first-rate hunting tourism facilities in the villages of Elenovo, Golyamo Gradishte and the Marinka Laka locality near thetown Popovo are a major attraction for hunters from all over Europe. The development of tourism is favored by the woodlands around the villages of Goritsa, Dolets, Ivancha, Kovachevec, Palamartsa, Aprilovo. The beautiful nature along the valley of Golyamata Reka and its clean water provide excellent conditions for weekend and fishing tourism.
